Curious Findings: HashTab

Program Description
The best way to verify if a file is what you’re expecting is to check if the unknown file’s matches the of the file you’re expecting (usually given to you on the download page of a program, for example).

Since this is the internet, everyone and their dog can start up a website for a small fee – or no fee at all – which brings to question the validity of the majority of the internet’s information. This is where file hashes come into play.

As you may or may not know, I’m quite into the PSP Scene and as such often find myself updating to the latest custom firmware available or what not which usually requires official Sony update eboots.

Unfortunately, some sites feel it is necessary to upload corrupted eboots (or they do it by mistake?), upload the wrong file and name it something else…or whatever. They just like to deceive you. Or I could just be paranoid and your download could just be corrupted for another reason ;) . The only way for you to really check how valid a file someone offers to you is, is by checking its file against the provided by the author.

And here’s where (developed by Cody Batt) helps us out. After you install , whenever you view a files properties, you will now see a new File Hashes tab where you can easily calculate the files various hashes.

supports more types than what is shown in the screenshot, just right click the area where the hashes are displayed and click on “Settings…” to choose the types of hashes you’d like to see.

Another useful feature provides is an interface to choose a file to compare against the current file you are dealing with. No need to type hashes out or copy and paste them, just choose the file and does the work for you.

License Type
is completely , all you have to do is agree that “ is the coolest thing ever.”

System Requirements
Windows is required in order for this application to function.

Installation

  1. Download HashTab.
  2. Run the setup program you downloaded and follow the on screen instructions

Uninstallation

  1. Use Add or Remove Programs to uninstall it just like any other application.

Download: HashTab.
Info: Check out HashTab’s website.

I just want to know how this program hashes so fast.. Visual basic built in hash functions are REDICULOUSLY slow. A dll called quickhash.dll for hashes costs money to remove a delay caused by the trial version AND it’s slower than this program…

    Is Cody Batt reading this?
Hashtab 2.1 doesn’t work when I use it as restricted user (Windows XP Home).
    Can you verify this?

Hey Gerolf, Cody here… you can send me email at skry@gmail.com. What do you mean by doesn’t work? Tab doesn’t show up? Crashes? Doesn’t return the right hashes?

I can’t see why it wouldn’t work for a restricted user, unless that user doesn’t have rights to even read the file, then of course it can’t be hashed.

    Hi Cody,

I was going to reply to him to tell him to contact you but…unless I’m mistaken, there’s no way to contact you mentioned anywhere on your website? Except b@beeblebrox.org.

    Thanks for the response :)

    Follow-up to above post:
Before installing it, that is. Don’t see any digital signature when downloading in either Firefox or Opera. (Hardly exceptional in that as digital signatures seem to be exception rather than the rule for downloads, something I don’t get)

Also, after installing, HashTab shows CRC32 and SHA-1 hashes for the HashTab Setup file itself, yet
    http://beeblebrox.org/hashtab/ only gives the MD5.

Here’s a few more you will surely enjoy if you haven’t found them already…
    VLC Media Player – http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

If VLC can’t play it, you don’t need to it. The media player that fills all your needs. It can handle DVDs, (S)VCDs, Audio CDs, web streams, TV cards and much more. You don’t need to keep track of a dozen codec packs you need to have installed. VLC has all codecs built-in. It comes with support for nearly all codec there is.

    Edit Plus 3 – http://www.editplus.com/

It’s a versatile notepad replacement… with added features like nuclear powered, dosed on ripped fuel… and mainlining crystal meth! More features than I care to list, moire than you will ever use, but always want to have.

    VisiPics – http://www.visipics.info/

You’ve had a rough evening downloading your favorite porn, it’s late your nodding off and you’ve just downloaded the same image of that hot chick thirteen times. Sure you have a mammoth hard drive, but there’s still a lot a porn to download. That’s when you need VisiPics! It’s an intelligent duplicate image finder. VisiPics does more than just look for identical files, it goes beyond checksums to look for similar pictures and does it all with a simple user interface. First, you select the root folder or folders to find and catalogue all of your pictures. It then applies five image comparison filters in order to measure how close pairs of images on the hard drive are. Best of all you can have it auto detect the duplicates, so even at your most retarded you can remove the dams that are blocking your drive flow without losing a single beaver. In a manner of speaking.

    Calibre – http://calibre-ebook.com/

Calibre is THE e-book library manager. It can view, convert and catalog e-books in most of the major e-book formats. It can also talk to a few e-book reader devices. It can go out to the internet and fetch metadata for your books. It can download newspapers and convert them into e-books for convenient reading. It is cross platform, running on Linux, Windows and OS X. Practically, the coolest thing on the planet, excluding things that explode or use lasers.

    7-Zip – http://www.7-zip.org/

It’s like WinZip, just cooler and free. Like its better-known competitors, 7-Zip unpacks a host of archive formats, including ZIP, TAR, GZ, and its own 7z format (which is up to 40 percent smaller than a standard ZIP archive). Unlike WinZip, though, it can create TAR and GZ archives, which are commonly used on Unix and Linux systems.

I’ve have more if you are interested.
